Abstract

The ?Auto-electrical Systems, Repairs and Computer? course offer by students of electrical/electronic technology in Nigerian Colleges of education is too broad to be completed within one semester. Completion of this course within one semester needed to be supplemented by a series of discrete computer-based learning environments. Hence, the authors designed and developed a computer-based environment for learning the repairs of a motor vehicle starting system as one of such series of discrete computer-based learning environments required. The developmental effort began with the examination of the physical motor vehicle starting system. This was followed by system analysis which culminated into both functional and non-functional requirements. The software architectural design followed client-server architecture with two layers of application and database system. The software was implemented using Java programming language in netbeans(8.2) IDE(Integrated Development Environment).MySQL database was incorporated into the developed system for storage of various data, such as users? login details and results. The database and its tables were created using MYSQL workbench (8.0). The developed learning environment has four main modules, namely, theory, practical ,examination and database. The theory module contains principles of operation of starting system. The practical module on the other hand provides learning environments where student will learn how to troubleshoot and repair various problems concerning starting system through problem solving strategy. The examination module is a multiple choice test which test students? understanding of various parts of starting system as well as its principles of operation The database stores users? login details and students results. With the developed system, Student can view his/her examination result immediately after finishing the examination. Likewise, the lecturer can view students? results after the examination session. The developed system was tested by students and staff and expressed their satisfaction with the performance of the developed training system. They recommended the used of the developed computer-based learning environment for teaching the troubleshooting and repairs of motor vehicle starting system in the College.
