Abstract

Western education in Nigeria was an imported system; the exporters and the importers had different aims in mind in bringing Western education into the country. The former wanted the enculturation of the colonial subjects in the metropolitan culture and the latter wanted the system for national development and the eventual equal social status with the exporters. In a bid to achieve this end, the educational system in Nigeria has undergone many reforms, from UPE to 6-3-3-4 and now the UBE with the current reforms in meeting with the demands of EFA and the Millennium Development goals.
