Agricultural credit plays a vital role in enhancing agricultural productivity, ensuring rural development, and promoting economic growth in developing economies like India. This study examines the role and performance of Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) in providing agricultural credit in India. Over the years, SCBs have emerged as the dominant institutional source of agricultural finance, particularly after the nationalization of banks and the introduction of priority sector lending policies. The study is based on secondary data collected from reports of the Reserve Bank of India, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, and other government publications. The analysis focuses on trends in agricultural credit, the changing share of SCBs in total institutional lending, and the impact of these accredit on agricultural productivity. The findings reveal that the share of SCBs in agricultural credit has increased significantly, while the role of cooperative banks has declined over time. The study concludes that while SCBs have strengthened the agricultural credit system, policy measures are required to improve inclusiveness, efficiency, and sustainability in rural credit delivery.
